Introducing Your New Club President

December 7th, 2019 Comments off

Hello friends and alumni of the University of Iowa who reside in Michigan! My name is Teresa Aylor Silver, class of ’85, and I have just taken the reins of the Southeast Michigan Iowa Club. My youngest child is soon graduating from high school and I foresee time on my hands to give to this club. At the same time, your former president Adrian Forbes, class of ’98, is busy with a young family and a demanding career and desires a break. Adrian, who started the club way back in 2003, will remain involved and will continue managing our club website, which I greatly appreciate. I would love to run this club with many helpers, so if you have an expertise to share or a volunteer spirit, I would sure like to hear from you!

Do stay tuned to this Facebook page for upcoming information about our Bowl Game Watch Party, which I will announce Sunday after the NCAA doles out the games. I am laying the groundwork for an awesome venue that has big screens, cold beer and good food. I have 3 venues selected, with the selection dependent on the date and time of our designated bowl game, so please watch our Facebook page on Sunday. This event will mark a renewal of the Iowa Club and I hope that you will attend, not only to watch our beloved team, but to share with me all the things that you would like to see in a local Iowa Club. For the future, I would like to plan a variety of events throughout the year where we Iowans can come together socially and share our mutual love of black and gold, reminisce about our time at Iowa, network professionally and further the advancement of the University of Iowa. Our school’s musical anthem, On Iowa, is truly a call to alumni wherever we might live now, to stay connected after graduation and forward the reach of the University of Iowa.

I was raised in a tiny farm town in southeast Iowa called Keosauqua, which is straight south of Iowa City on the Des Moines River and Missouri border, and I have lived in Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado and now Michigan with my husband Mitch, who was raised in Chicago and is also an Iowa grad. We live in Milford and have four adult children. I double majored in journalism and political science at Iowa and worked several years in the newspaper industry and was a press relations specialist for a Fortune 500 high-tech company in my heyday, but I am now a stay-at-home mom. Most recently I helped a Michigan non-profit cancer charity with public relations writing and I have done a great deal of publicity writing and photography for the public schools my children have attended. At Iowa I was a reporter for the Daily Iowan, editor of the Greek Hawkeye, a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, served on Panhellenic Council, played flute in the concert band and was a member of the color guard in the Hawkeye Marching band. I return to Iowa every year for Homecoming to march in the Alumni Band, which is an experience I now share with my daughter Erica who is also an alumna of the Hawkeye Marching Band. I’ve got to tell you, you aren’t really old until your child shares college alumni status with you! I just learned today that Adrian was also in the Hawkeye Marching Band more than a decade after I was there and more than a decade before my daughter. If there are any more of us, we might have to form a Michigan contingent of the alumni band and play tunes at bowl game watches!! Did you know that the Alumni Band practices just one hour the morning of Homecoming game day and delivers a pre-game show at Kinnick Stadium that includes 3 songs and we spell “IOWA” and “HAWKS” on the field? I guess that once you learn to read a marching chart you never forget how, no matter how many years go by. My husband Mitch is an engineering executive at an automotive-related company, which brought us here to Michigan in 2012. He is a mentor to business students at the University of Iowa in the Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program, and has agreed to teach an online business class for the Tippie School of Business next fall.

I can’t wait to meet you and learn what you want from our Iowa Club. If you would like to reach out to me with questions or ideas, please email me at mtsilver@comcast.net. I welcome your input.
ON IOWA!
